What is obstructive sleep apnoea?
People who suffer from obstructive sleep apnoea slow or stop breathing for short periods while sleeping. These “apnoeas” can occur hundreds of times during a night, resulting in poor quality sleep and daytime sleepiness. As it happens during sleep the person suffering the sleep disturbance may not even be aware of the problem.
How is obstructive sleep apnoea diagnosed?
An overnight sleep study is required for the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnoea, and measurement of its severity.
This is done upon referral by a specialist sleep physician who will discuss both the results, and any recommended management, with you.
CPAP therapy for obstructive sleep apnoea.
Continuous positive airways pressure (CPAP) is a very common treatment for sleep apnoea.
It is very effective in most cases. A CPAP pump delivers air at constant low pressure through a mask that seals the mouth and/or nose. This pressure keeps the airways open during sleep to allow uninterrupted breathing.

Trial of CPAP therapy
A trial of CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) is usually for one month.
It requires a therapy prescription from your sleep physician to determine the appropriate pressure settings on the CPAP unit.
Therapy requires a CPAP machine and a mask.
Equipment is available for short term rental for a trial of therapy. If you decide to proceed with equipment purchase upon completion of your trial, this rental cost will then be deducted from your purchase price.
CPAP machines are available with “fixed pressure” or “autoset” which automatically adjusts the pressure through the night.
A mask fitting enables you to try the different models, then test it out during the trial period.
Masks are available in many formats:
Nasal
Pillow mask (previously called intra-nasal)
Full face (covers both nose & mouth)
Ongoing support during your trial of therapy, both face to face & telephone, is personalised to your needs.
We will liaise with your doctor as required.
